It’s really eye-opening when you see any organization completely throw everything they claim to believe out the window, especially when they gain nothing from it, this is what the DNC did by electing Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee. In the past four years, there have been endless condemnations of President Donald Trump’s record from his mental state, treatment of immigrants, to his sexual assaults. Which makes it all the more baffling that the DNC would elect a senile Democrat with a poor record on immigration and an alleged case of sexual assault. You win with who you attract, you lose with who you lose. The DNC decided that courting “moderate republicans” is far more important than the youth vote, putting all their hope on a group statistically least likely to participate.
After so much time and attention was given to the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation and emphasis on believing women. By electing Biden, the DNC ignores those exact same women, and now you have lost every single woman who supports the #MeToo Movement’s idea of holding powerful men accountable. This is not entirely lost on Biden’s staffers who have been deleting past support for rape survivors like Christine Blasey Ford off their social media, completely selling out their beliefs for the chance at a Biden presidency. After Elizabeth Warren made a big deal of confronting Mike Bloomberg about his NDA’s in the Nevada debate, her campaign had nothing to say when Tara Reade approached them about her experience. By electing Biden, you give his entire constituency permission to look the other way and get over it. This is exactly what Trump has been criticized for, which makes it seem like all of their issues with Trump are purely aesthetic.
Bernie Sanders attracted progressive young people in record numbers, while Biden struggles to gain any support from voters under 50, which is a recipe for disaster as Bowling Alone has shown, “People who characterized themselves as being “middle of the road” ideologically have disproportionately disappeared from public meetings, local organizations, political parties, rallies, and the like.” Putting all of your time and money into a candidate with no base. Instead of the candidate with the largest grassroots campaign in American history, they went with the guy who regularly yells at voters to support another candidate if they criticize his record. In the first “concessions” he made to support Sanders voters, forgiving some student debt for “low-income and middle-class people” and with access “to Medicare when they turn sixty, instead of when they turn sixty-five.” which is especially ridiculous when you consider that this is supposed to sway voters under 50 or the fact that fifty-five to sixty-five-year-olds have the highest median incomes and sixty to sixty-five-year-olds have the highest household wealth. Sanders had thousands of volunteers canvassing across state lines and phone banking nonstop, if Biden wants to stand a chance, he needs to get his base as civically active.
What should people expect besides broken promises from the DNC, like all the health care reforms that could’ve helped while millions were kicked off their health insurance during a National Pandemic? The DNC calls their idea of “party unity” whatever makes their donors happy, even though Medicare for All has majority support in America from the right and left. After hearing about kids in cages over the past few years, you’d think they wouldn’t want to elect someone from the administration responsible. But as Joe Biden has said himself, “Nothing would fundamentally change.” which is exactly what the DNC wants over the real “threat” of positive change from Sanders’ policies. If the DNC tried to defeat Trump as much as they did Sanders, maybe then Biden wouldn’t be the candidate. But of course, when Biden loses, it will be the fault of “Bernie Bros” and never the DNC. Just like when they used the same exact strategy with Hillary, assuming that just not being Trump should be enough for voters. They’re wrong, and they’re already preparing for it to happen again. If Trump wins, it will be because Sanders and his supporters, if Biden wins, it will be despite Sanders and his supporters. No one is entitled to the nomination and the Democratic establishment doesn’t deserve a turn as president. If they want to win, they’ll have to earn our votes, just like everyone else.
