Rebuilding Civic Communities: Editorial

– Johnese Robertson

In previous weeks we’ve discussed the decline of civic engagement and social connectedness.  But how can we rebuild those civic communities? Can we continue to rebuild them while we are encouraged to stay at home and distance ourselves from others?  This week our class blog posts aim to discuss rebuilding those civic communities and its importance.

Rebuilding civic communities begins with ourselves. Some of the posts this week focus on what it means to be a citizen and how to fully take advantage of our citizenship, citizenship by proxy, and even how the social capital one has allows them to be more civically engaged. Rebuilding civic communities also starts with institutions. Another set of posts discusses how groups such as the Boys Scouts of America shape civic engagement within communities, as well as schools and even broadcast news. The harmful uses of civic engagement such as the formation of groups such as the Klu Klux Klan and invisible communities is also discussed in this week’s posts. Lastly, some writers this week have chosen to write about implications for the future of Biden’s presidential campaign as well as technology’s impact on the recent campaigns.
