Why Citizenship is not a spectator sport

Its 2020, an election year where nothing could ever be the same again, we are in the middle of a pandemic, where no one can leave their houses unless they need too. With so many uncertainties heading into the 2020 Presidential election in November, voters are lost on who to vote for, as since the runners can’t make public speeches now, or rallies, all we have is the biased new networks. During this hard time, citizens feel like it is hard to do anything before making their vote for our next president, but they need to realize that during an election year, they can’t be passive and spectate without knowing any knowledge. No matter that circumstances, people who want to have a voice into this years election cannot sit back and just make the popular vote. Citizens seem to be basing their recent votes off of the popular decisions of biased news networks towards the runners parties.

As a nation, we are supposed to engage and take part into events such as the elections, and put our voices out there on social media and talk about our visions. We can’t sit back during a time where everything and everyone is closed in. Where pandemics rule the world, even though we can’t watch presidential campaigns on TV, we can still do research on the remaining people running, and see what they were pushing before this virus took over the globe.

“we span the world. We touch and are touched by virtually every part of the globe. Because of our tremendous diversity and reach, one might think that managing an increasingly global environment would come naturally to Americans. And yet huge numbers of us don’t know Vietnam from Venezuela or French from Farsi. The National Geographic-Roper Public Affairs 2006 Geographic Literacy Study’s final report stated that young people in the United States “… are unprepared for an increasingly global future. Far too many lack even the most basic skills for navigating the international economy or understanding the relationships among people and places that provide critical context for world events.” How can this be? And what is to be done?” – John M Sirek.

Many people like to sit back and watch the election without having their say, and I feel like if everyone eligible to vote would place a vote, we would have the right president for our country. If people did more than vote for the popular vote, we would have the right president for our country. 2020 is the year of unexpected and who knows what is next as we head into the second quarter of our year. Citizenship is not a spectator sport, and the quicker we learn that, the better it will be for us as we start to pave the way for our next generation.
